Perinatal Mental Health

Becoming a parent can evoke a wide variety of feelings and reactions, sometimes in quite unexpected and confusing ways. It can be difficult to acknowledge that parenthood isn't always blissful, and scary to accept that it's not what we imagined it to be.

Through my research and clinical work at Columbia University Medical Center and Yale University Medical Center, I have developed expertise in working with parents, especially mothers, in the perinatal and postpartum periods.

There are many challenges that can arise during these periods of great change, including:
  • balancing family and work;
  • grappling with our own experiences of being parented;
  • adjusting to new identities and roles;
  • re-defining romantic relationships; and
  • making sure to take care of ourselves.

Postpartum anxiety and depression often go undetected and untreated, in part because of the shame and stigma surrounding them, but the good news is that they are treatable. I enjoy--and feel strongly about--supporting new and expectant mothers as they make the transition to parenthood.
